Jeffrey S. Wexler Activity here at CinemaSound

I do check in with CinemaSound, it is my creation of course, but not as often as I used to. There is not a lot going on here, that's for sure, but I hope that those who are participating are having a good time. It does not look like CinemaSound will ever take over from my regular long running Discussion Group at jwsound.net and that's okay... it was only an experiment, this Ning network, and it is what it is. I have no intention of taking this… Continue

Jeffrey S. Wexler Discussion Group meltdown

I was quite traumatized by the malware attack on my Discussion Group. I realize that I have a high sense of responsibility to keep the whole thing running properly. It is very disconcerting when things happen that are so far out of one's control. Fortunately, with the help of my good friend Laurence Abrams, we were able to diagnose the problem and figure out a course of action. There were so many files infected - affected that the most viable solution was the do a complete restore from a previou… Continue

Rob Polhemus Mix Mag Review of the 788T

I was thumbing through this months Mix Mag and found this good review of the 788T. I recently got my hands on one of these units and really loved the look and feel. I am an avid user of the 442 and 744T and really like the direction of Sound Devices. I really wish they would come out with a 5 or 6 channel mixer with a recorder built in for those of us who do Reality TV. This would make our lives easier and harder but would give us more options. Here is a link to the review for those of you who… Continue

Jeffrey S. Wexler Our future in "New Media"

I am posting some food for thought on the heels of the ratification of our new I.A. contract. These comments from a very active and concerned member of the Camera Guild: What I don't fully understand in this corporate paradigm is how PEOPLE get away with immoral, nation-destroying, middle-class-killing policies by hiding behind The Corporation. Well, although it's been said that "corporations have no ethics, they are amoral entities," the fact is that corporations are run by PEOPLE. PEOPLE make… Continue

Jeffrey S. Wexler Has everyone VOTED?

Has everyone voted (those that can, of course), and how do we think the vote on the contract is going to go? I would love to see it voted down, particularly because I think it is important for the future to let people know how the normal process of negotiating, presenting a proposed contract, voting to accept or not accept, going back in and re-negotiating. These are things which most I.A. members (even our leaders) have almost no experience with. Other unions in this country and elsewhere, cons… Continue

Jeffrey S. Wexler President of Filmtools speaks out

Many of you may know Stan McClain who owns Filmtools. He recently sent out the Filmtools newsletter to his customers, urging them to vote NO on the new contract. I am posting the newsletter here since I think it is a well written piece, written from the heart in an effort to get the I.A. back on track to be a democratic and representative labor union.

Jeffrey S. Wexler Vote on the Contract

quoted from Steve Nelson ... read this carefully, please. Dear Friends, Colleagues, Brothers and Sisters, By now you have received the latest big envelope from the Local, the one containing a scary letter from your Business Agent, another scary letter from the president of our International, the dreaded Memorandum of Agreement and the actual ballot. If you haven’t yet mailed in your ballot I hope you’ll take a moment to read this before you do. I think most of you know me. I’m writing without… Continue

Jeffrey S. Wexler The closing of the Motion Picture Home

Keith Olberman spoke about the closing of the Motion Picture Home. Here is a transcript from that show: OLBERMANN: Alex Rodriguez holds a news conference about taking medicine he should not have taken and twice says, quote, I have to take my medicine. That‘s next, but first time for COUNTDOWN‘s number two story, tonight‘s worst persons in the world. The bronze to Dr. David Tillman, CEO of the Motion Picture and Television Fund. Jeffrey S. Wexler Incentives ... who benefits?

For the individual who gets a job in one of the states that has an incentive program, the program clearly benefits that person at the time. The perpetuation of incentives and the "incentive war" it creates, ultimately does not benefit us at all. There is a lot to be said about this. cross-posted from Gary Dunham's comments at the Discussion Group: The key term is "lure". (From LA to NY) Incentives do not create jobs. Incentives move jobs. The multiplier effect (supposed tax revenue) is… Continue

Jeffrey S. Wexler New Media

The very real concern over the 400 hours requirement has overshadowed some very important provisions of this new contract. Scott Kaye and Alan Disler, both very active in Camera Guild, made the following comments: On Feb 9, 2009, at 8:54 PM, Scott Kaye wrote: "Does this mean that, if ratified, members working out-of-classification on "New Media" productions WOULD have to re-rate, so long as they failed to report their job? If this is correct, it looks like they are trying to legislate the rContinue
