introduction

hi all,

i just found this network through sync.sound.cinema and i have a seedling as my picture because i am new in the world of sound for film.

i wanted to introduce myself and wish this site great success, and also ask a question to all members: can you suggest to me or cull from your personal experience, ways of practicing techniques that you have found to be important on location that i could adapt for myself?

that is helpful to hear, because it tells me that i am on the right track. i am scheduling some small student projects and looking for apprentice/intern positions in New York to immerse myself in. im in a good position right now where i just need to keep myself feed and clothed, shelter is provided for the next 6 months (no, its not my moms' basement, we dont have moms' basements in NYC). so im just a sponge for experience, knowledge and wisdom right now for this type of work. i have studio access at a media-centered university, so im cooking up a plan for that resource, and a friend shooting a no budget short in two weeks that he needs a one man show for. also getting some work with a sound mixer to support with boom op, set up etc.

so maybe thats the answer, is just get in there!! did you do any formal training or was this your course of study as well?

I do clipping tests with my kids (they are very noisy!) whenever I get a "new" mic. My "new" mics being T powered Sennheisers (so at least 30 years old). Haven't overloaded the Sound Devices pre-amps yet.

My favourite way of learning is to go do it. It's very easy to find calls for sound people in the UK on low-end (read: you will not be paid) movies. Plus you get to meet people who may also be moving up the ladder.

What resources do you have available? That may help with suggestions ...
